Teaching Academy & Childcare

The Teaching Academy & Childcare Program is offered to all juniors and seniors and prepares students who may want to be a teacher or child care provider. All four courses in the Teaching Academy can be taken as CCP credit giving students 12 college credits towards their further education. Students have hands-on internship placement opportunities in PreK-12 schools/centers in the community.

Junior Year Overview

Junior students will examine the history and philosophy of education. Juniors will assess developmental appropriate practices; legal, ethical and organizational issues; and the challenge of teaching and caring for children with diverse needs while developing age-appropriate learning experiences and curriculum to engage children.

They will determine curricular goals, create lesson plans, and employ observation and assessment strategies to evaluate children’s growth and development.

Senior Year Overview

Senior students will apply developmentally appropriate techniques to advance learners’ social and emotional growth. They will create classroom environments to maximize the learning potential of each learner by creating and enforcing classroom rules, establishing classroom routines, and model self-discipline for learners. In addition, seniors will examine the relationship of families, communities and schools in the growth and development of learners. They will implement strategies to actively involve families and communities in child development and learning, determine community resources and services available to families and schools, and act as advocates for students and learning.

Teaching Academy & Childcare students also participate in the Lancaster EdRising chapter where they gain many valuable communication and leadership skills. Past students have successfully competed at the state and national level. Students from this program are in a more favorable position to have a career with Lancaster City Schools!
