The Animal Science Program is offered to all juniors and seniors; however, there are elective courses offered to freshmen and sophomores that are interested in this career field and want to get started sooner!
Junior Year Overview
Junior students will identify and apply responsible animal science principles, routine husbandry practices to companion animals and small livestock animals. Topics will include principles and practices of nutrient utilization, animal welfare, breeding programs and management of facility/housing design, selection and management of facilities and herd populations, meal plans and general care practices.
Senior Year Overview
Senior students will continue their studies to examine causes, symptoms, and treatment of common diseases with emphasis on developing preventative health management plans and breeding programs. Topics will include the study of pathogens, classifying types of diseases and disorders, veterinary pharmacology, radiology and imaging techniques, principles of surgery, safe laboratory skills, and the concepts of ethics and professionalism in the workplace. Students will perform animal health assessments and compare to standard characteristics.
Animal Science students also participate in the Lancaster FFA chapter, where they gain many valuable leadership skills and can compete at the regional, state and national level. Students enrolled in this program will have an SAE (Supervised Agricultural Experience) project that is developed by the student and completed outside of the school day. Students have many opportunities for leadership, personal growth, and career success when enrolled in this program!
