The Health Tech Program is offered to all juniors and seniors. This program is a good foundation for students who want to go into nursing and/or other healthcare occupations after graduation. Students are required to take Chemistry and Anatomy & Physiology along with this program. One of the Health Tech courses, Medical Terminology, can be taken as a CCP credit course.
Junior Year Overview
Junior students are given an overview of the opportunities available in the healthcare industry. They will learn fundamental skills in effective and safe patient care that include clinical skills necessary to assess, plan, provide, and evaluate care to patients in healthcare settings. In addition, juniors will apply first aid principles and techniques needed for response to choking, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and other life-threatening emergencies. They will also be introduced to exercise science and sports medicine, the field of biomedical research and the importance of managing health information.
Senior Year Overview
Senior students will collect vital signs including temperature, pulse rate, respiration rate, blood pressure and perform phlebotomy procedures with emphasis on infection prevention, universal precautions, proper patient identification, specimen acquisition, handling, and processing. Seniors will also be able to take their Medical Terminology course as a CCP course. This course focuses on defining medical terms with an emphasis on building a working medical vocabulary. Topics include using the appropriate abbreviations and symbols for anatomical, physiological and pathological classifications and the associated medical specialties and procedures that will help students interpret and translate medical records and documents.
Health Tech students also participate in the Lancaster SkillsUSA chapter, where they gain many valuable leadership skills and can compete at the state and national level. Recent past students have won many awards at the regional and state level!
